Meet John

Senator John A. DeFrancisco was first elected to the New York State Senate in 1992, and currently serves as the Senate Deputy Majority Leader, representing most of Onondaga County and parts of Cayuga County. He has been a leader in the State Senate championing issues such as budget and procurement reform, public safety, creating jobs, reducing taxes, and increasing government transparency. Since the latter half of 2017, Senator DeFrancisco has been traveling throughout New York State, meeting with Republican leaders and New Yorkers to discuss his vision for the state.

Senator DeFrancisco has served in leadership roles throughout his life. Prior to being named Deputy Majority Leader of the New York State Senate, he served as Chairman of the Senate Finance and Judiciary Committees. Before being elected to the Senate, Senator DeFrancisco served for 11 years on the Syracuse Common Council, including as Council President. A community leader and education advocate, Senator DeFrancisco also previously held the position of President of the Syracuse City School District Board of Education.

Senator DeFrancisco is a lifelong resident of Syracuse. He graduated from Syracuse University where he was captain of his baseball team. Senator DeFrancisco then received his law degree from Duke University and served as a Judge Advocate in the United States Air Force. He and his wife Linda, have three grown children and eight grandchildren.
